Home Page: Summary

Starting in October 2010, the KickApps Control Panel (a.k.a. Affiliate Center) offers several different varieties of home page options for site publishers using KickApps hosted pages. These include:

  1. Don't Include a Home Tab in my Site's Navigation
  2. Social Network Homepage
  3. Custom Homepage
  4. Blog Homepage
  5. Link my Home Tab to an External URL

Any of these options can be configured at any time by navigating in the Affiliate Center / Control Panel to: Configure > Pages > Home Page.

Don’t Include a Home Tab in my Site’s Navigation

Some publishers don’t feel that having a tab that reads “Home” is relevant or useful to their site. This option allows these publishers to disable the “Home” tab. When this option is selected, the “Home” tab disappears and the other tabs move to the left.

Social Network Home Page

This is the “classic KickApps” home page that features all of the most recent activity around your network, including Member activity, media and metadata posted most recently. For more detail on this page, visit Customize Your Community Homepage

Custom Home Page

The Custom Home Page option allows you to set any one of your KickApps Custom Pages (published using the Kickapps Custom Pages application) as your home page. You can start by publishing a Custom Page, then configuring it as your home page, or, within the Configure > Pages > Home Page options, select “Custom Page” as your home page option, then use the link present there to start the Custom Page publisher.

At any time, a site publisher may opt to make a new custom page the site home page by checking a box on the Custom Page publisher reading “Make this page my Custom Home Page.”

Blog Home Page

The Blog Home Page provides features that best resemble a blog, and are centered around publishers who wish to operate a multi-author blogging site.

By default, when this option is selected, the most recent blog posts will be featured. The site publisher has the option in the Blog Home Page configuration to:

  1. restrict home page publishing to webmaster, admin, editor or members
  2. specify how many posts to show on the blog home page
  3. publish a welcome message or custom html promo to the blog home page
  4. publish sidebar modules including a Twitter module, most recent posts module, a categories module, and a custom html promo sidebar module.

Link my Home Tab to an external URL

This option very simply creates a hyperlink to any webpage you specify. This could be any webpage on the web, or, strictly speaking, it could also be any of your KickApps pages. Publishers generally use this option to have your “home” tab link to a main hub page that is not hosted by KickApps.
