FAQ's The Basics
- How many websites can I power with KickApps?
-
As many as you'd like. To add more sites to your KickApps affiliate account, login and choose "Add a new site" from the select list that appears on the upper-right of the Affiliate Center interface.
For now, each of your sites is completely distinct from the others, but we're working on tools to allow your communities to share media and members across multiple sites.
- How much does it cost to use the KickApps platform?
-
Check out our pricing page or feel free to contact us for more information.
- I created an account – where's my KickApps community?
-
-
You can access your KickApps-powered community platform through your widgets. Log in to the Affiliate Center, click on the Widgets tab, and create an All-in-One Widget to get started.
Remember that KickApps only provides the social networking and user-generated rich media components of a website. You'll still need your own webpages and URLs to hold the widgets that drive users to your KickApps-powered community.
For more information, see our support center .
-
- Who owns my community's media and member information?
-
-
You do! KickApps provides hosting and management tools, but your members and content belong to you.
KickApps will not distribute or share your content with other websites without your permission.
-
- How do you make money?
-
We provide a no-cost advertising based model. Alternatively, websites may choose to insert their own ads on pages served by KickApps for a reasonable CPM fee.

User-Generated Content and Media
- What kind of videos, photos, or audio files can my community members upload?
-
The KickApps platform accepts all common media formats.
When a user uploads a video, we transcode it for display in a standard Flash viewer. As a result, all of your community's content is accessible with any Flash-enabled browser. No third party player or client-side software required.
- Why does my audio file play too fast, too slow, or sound like a chipmunk?
-
Your audio file may be encoded at a sampling rate that our audio player doesn’t support. As our player is built in Flash, it can only accept files that have been encoded at multiples of 11.025 kHz. Try encoding your file at 11.025 kHz, 22.050 kHz, or 44.100 kHz, and upload it again.
- Are there any bandwidth or disk space limits for my site?
-
User-uploaded videos, photos, and audio files are limited to 100MB per file. Your members may upload as many files as they'd like.
- What are the specs for the video content displayed on the KickApps platform?
-
We encode all videos into Flash (FLV) files. The full details are:
- Bitrate: 750kbps 20 frames per second (fps)
- 420px wide x 316 px high
- Codec: on2 vp6 FLV
- Audio codec: MP3
- Audio bitrate: 48kbps
- Audio sample rate: 22.05 mhz Stereo
- How can I make sure that my members' content is appropriate for my site?
-
-
The KickApps platform provides advanced media management tools that make it quick and easy to implement whatever review and approval process you choose. Busy webmasters can automate some or all of these approvals by media type.
Moreover, all visitors can report inappropriate content with a single click from any media play page. When media is flagged as "inappropriate," it will be highlighted within the Affiliate Center media management system with a notation indicating the number of times flagged. Your webmaster will receive an email notification following each flag.

Integrating With Other Systems
- What if I already have videos, photos, or audio files featured on my site?
-
KickApps does not need to replace your existing premium content management system. However, by contributing your premium content to your community platform you achieve a number of benefits. First, you can create Widgets that contain only your premium content and invite site visitors to "steal" those Widgets to paste on their own personal pages.
Second, the KickApps platform allows you to strategically integrate content produced by your editorial staff alongside user-generated content.
Mixing your own content into the community is a great way to seed your site and keep members coming back for more. Be an active member of your own community by contributing media.
- How can I integrate my Content Management System (CMS) with KickApps?
-
-
The KickApps media management platform is designed to integrate easily with major template-based content management systems. A key platform feature is its Widget-oriented implementation: simply create some KickApps community Widgets and add them to your CMS page templates In minutes, you can link users from your CMS-generated pages to KickApps-hosted media and social networking pages.
We are also developing a suite of APIs and remotely-accessible Ajax calls, which will allow you to access platform functionality directly and integrate it into your own display code. Look for more information in our upcoming release notes, posted in our blog.
-
- I already have a community with registered members. Can I integrate them?
-
Yes, the KickApps platform includes APIs for integrated member registration, login, and session management. Contact us for more information about our single sign-on options.
- Can I integrate my third-party traffic tracking and reporting system?
-
-
Absolutely. Most third-party reporting systems such as Google Analytics or Omniture are implemented by placing a small code snippet on all of your site pages. Simply add that code to your KickApps pages' custom header or footer code (accessible via the Affiliate Center in Configure > Pages > Global Page Template) and every KickApps-powered page in your community will be tracked in your third-party reports.
-
In addition, all of the reports provided in the KickApps Affiliate Center include tools for exporting your data in a variety of formats.

Nine Steps to a Successful Online Community.
- Will my KickApps-powered pages show up in popular search engines?
-
-
All KickApps pages can be indexed by search engines. We’ve based our page code on good SEO practices, such as using relevant keywords in page links and building page HTML with semantic markup. Some Ajax-driven functionality (such as page comments) will not be indexed, but keyword-rich content such as descriptions, tags, and categories will all be captured. If you have any suggestions for improving SEO, please let us know.
The biggest challenge in optimizing KickApps pages for search engines lies in our Widgets, nearly all of which are Ajax- or Flash-based. Search engine spiders will usually not traverse Widgets, so you should include at least one hard-coded link to a Play, List, or Profile page within your community – the spiders will find the rest of your content from there.

- How will comScore Media Metrix handle hits to my KickApps-powered pages?
-
To ensure that comScore credits your site for hits to your KickApps-powered pages, use DNS masking to mask your KickApps-powered pages to a subdomain of your site’s root. We have confirmed with comScore that hits to pages on a subdomain like community.yoursite.com will be credited to yoursite.com.
- Can I use KickApps to build a community that reaches beyond my website?
-
-
Absolutely. Building community beyond your website with KickApps happens in two ways. First, your community members spread the reach of your community by "stealing" your Widgets and pasting them all over the Internet (e.g. on personal pages, blogs, etc.).
Second, feel free to invite other websites with related content to join your community. Expanding your community in this fashion is easy and very effective. Simply provide your affiliate websites with a variety of your Widgets to paste on their pages (e.g. "join", "login", "recent members", "highest rated videos"). The more Widgets you spread throughout the Internet the larger and more viral your community will become.
-
- I work at an interactive agency. Can I put the platform to work for my clients?
-
Yes, we hope you will use the KickApps platform to add social networking and user-generated content to you projects. As with any deployment, the KickApps platform is free to install and use, with premium options for full ad controls and professional services.
- Will my users have any way of knowing that I use KickApps?
-
The KickApps platform is a white label solution with a single text link ("Powered by KickApps") at the bottom-left corner of your community's KickApps-powered pages.
- How can I track hits to my KickApps-powered pages?
-
-
If you’d like to use a 3rd-party web stats package like Google Analytics, code can be placed in your KickApps header HTML. This code will then call whatever ranking system you’re using and register hits for your KickApps-powered pages just as it would for pages hosted by your own servers.
If you prefer to track page hits by analyzing your own web server’s log files, create a 1x1 pixel transparent image, host it on your server, and reference this image in the header HTML of your KickApps pages. Using this method, every time your KickApps pages are hit, this image will be hit, and will register in your log files.

Advertising in Your Community
- Are advertisers really interested in user-generated pages?
-
KickApps is premised on the notion that communities formed around individuals with common interests are more loyal and durable. If your website provides content that appeals to a relatively specific, identifiable audience, your community will present a knowable demographic to advertisers. In other words, the context provided by your website is what distinguishes it from the large undifferentiated community portals.
Powered by KickApps, your community presents another attractive feature to advertisers. Because our media management system allows you to effectively pre-screen offensive material, advertisers looking to protect their brand will be far more inclined to pay a reasonable cost-per-thousand for your page views.
- Can I get some of that advertising action?
-
-
Sure thing! As soon as you create an affiliate account, you will be able to run ads through the right skyscraper ad slot on all pages.
You can also contact us if you want to control all of the ads (or have no ads) on your community pages. In those cases, KickApps earns a modest cost-per-thousand fee.

-
- Does the KickApps platform support pre- and post-roll advertising?
-
Yes, the KickApps platform supports both forms of in-stream advertising on any user-generated video content. The platform also includes controls for frequency capping.
